Aulestad is one of the best preserved artist homes in Norway. The Nobel Laureate Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson lived here with his family from 1875 until his death in 1910. In 1935 Aulestad opened as a museum.

Authentic home
In 1934 after the death of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's widow, Karoline Bjørnson, their home was turned over to the state and opened to the public as a museum during the summer months. Time has been stopped at Aulestad to give visitors an opportunity to experience the house and its beautiful garden as the
authentic setting of the last part of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson’s authorship.
